A family's determination to get a book in a child's hands

As a lover of reading I cannot remember a time in my life when reading was not apart of it. My weekly trips to the local library with my mother as a child left huge imprints on me. It was there with her that I was able to see a whole new world outside of my own. Right there within those four walls and the reach of my fingertips I could read about anybody, anytime, and anyplace. In my home it was never unusual to see my mother with a book in her face, and whenever I had the nerve to say I was bored she would quickly tell me "go read a book, as long as you have books you wont be bored."

Mommy said it and she was right.

Although I was fortunate to have the joy of reading influenced by my mother, that is not always the case for many children. Particularly African American children or other children of color. So I was really delighted to know that New York Times best selling author Denene Millner and her husband Nick Chiles are co-founders of and launching North Paran, A site that promotes books for, by and about black people. I love to read all types of books from all types of authors, but as a black woman myself I also enjoy reading books about people like me. And it is especially important for me to have books that are relatable to my own children. North Paran has books to cover all interests for adults and children...they even have a bargain book section (love it!). Even better, for every book that is purchased they will donate a book to a needy child. This is wonderful, a great way to give back to the community. For the child whose mother or father cannot or does not take them to the library, read to them or just can't afford it there is still an opportunity for them to develop their reading skills. I plan on showing my support and I hope you do to.

... Featuring Norah Jones

Okay, I hate to admit it but I cannot say that I was a Norah Jones fan prior to now. I know, some of you might be staring blankly at the screen right now wondering "what's my deal. " Really I don't know why I never liked to listen to her sing I Don't Know Why...Go figure.

Fast forward to 2010 with the release of her newest CD featuring cameos, duets and collaborations with many other artists that I absolutely love. Her work with artists such as Herbie Hancock, Talib Kweli, Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson has me scratching my head and wondering where I went wrong with this woman. Obviously I had a misconception, and closed minded view of her talent. I allowed my opinion of one song to over shadow all of her other work. Shame on me.

When given the chance to review her CD I went for it, looking for a chance to try something new and was pleasantly surprised. I could not get enough of it! I am playing this CD daily hearing her renditions of certain songs I was already familiar with such as ; Baby It's Cold Outside & Here We Go Again. I have even been turned on to other songs and artists that I have not heard of before such as ; the Dirty Dozen Band (Ruler of my heart) , The Little Willies (Love Me) and Sasha Dobson (Bull Rider).

The musical selections span over a period of 9 years. Obviously 9 years that I have missed out on. Excuse me while I hit the repeat button...

The Cd is available in stores now. Go to Norah Jones Official website for more info. You can also check out her YouTube channel for interviews and behind the scene scoops on her collaborations.
*No money was given for the review of this CD. However through my affiliation with One 2 One network, I was provided the CD to give my honest opinion*

Celeste Alexander Design Studios grand opening

October 9th I had the opportunity to celebrate the grand opening of Celeste Alexander Design Studios. I just had to go out to Snellville to show her some support. I first met Celeste at the Trumpet Awards gifting suite earlier this year and let me tell you, she is truly a spicy DecoratingSista! She knows how to bring color combinations together with patterns and textures in such a beautiful way. Having designed spaces for several Celebrities in the Atlanta area, there is definitely experience to be found. Celeste does not only work with big names, she will also work with the average person with a variety of budgets. Educating people on how to live beautifully and helping them reach their decorating goals, she does Drapery trunk shows, decorating parties with wine & cheese and private consults....she really gets it in! Not only is her style fabulous, she is also a beautiful person inside and out.

Taking the stress out of stressful ordering and gift buying, My Milson Road experience

As most of my readers know, I have recently moved into a new house. Of course, just the thought of moving in itself can cause one to feel a measure of stress. There are so many things to consider and remember; where to place the furniture? Should I get new furniture? I think I might need new pieces of decor to go with the new style of house. And the list goes on and on...

Well, with so many stressful decisions to make, there was one that was stress-less. It was absolutely stress-less when I went online to place my order at MilsonRoad.com for my 17 yr wedding anniversary Daily Portrait. In a few simple clicks I was able to create a customized lead news story that highlighted our wedding in 1993 and our anniversary in the current year of 2010. Throughout the process I was able to pick out not only the frame, but also the type of mat to go with it. Which they offered a nice variety of colors to compliment any home color scheme. The portrait itself is set up to look like an actual newspaper. I thought it was very cool to contrast and compare what was going on in the world on the day and year of our wedding to how things are now in the headlines. It showed the top songs of that year and the top songs of the current year. There were even highlights on best books, fashion, technology and sports. I could even upload my own pictures of the past and present.

I was very impressed at how thorough the Milson Road editing team were, when I submitted my info; such as names, dates, places, etc. I thought I had double checked everything to ensure no typographical error. Low and behold, I get an email regarding the spelling of my husbands name. I was so thankful that they double checked my double checking, because that would have been really embarrassing !

When my daily portrait finally arrived, I was very please by what I saw when I opened my package. The print was wrapped in a very cute lavender gift band ( my fav' color). Even my honey thought it looked great. I proudly hung it up right away. This is definitely worth keeping forever and displaying proudly.

Shortly after receiving it, I invited some friends over to check it out for themselves and share with them my experience. Just like I thought, they loved the concept and was already discussing how they could each use their coupon card that I gave them, courtesy of Milson Road.
Maxine excited about her coupon card she plans to use for parents anniversary. :)
I even had one person in on the conversation via Skype....now that is what I call a virtual party!
Showing my portrait to my friend on skype
These portraits can be purchased for yourself or as a gift for any occasion. Birth announcements, weddings, anniversary, birthdays, or anything that you consider to be a milestone. Whatever you may choose to use it for, you can be sure that it will be unique.

If you want to know more about how you can order one of these fabulous gifts for yourself, go directly to their site: www.MilsonRoad.com

A Day of Change

Within the past year I have had several opportunities to come my way due to my blogging and blogging networks. All of which I have appreciated immensely, however out of them all there is one in particular that is dear to my heart. That would be The Ronald McDonald House Charity.

My first experience with this charity was the Give A Hand campaign. Several blogger's and myself were invited to McDonald's to work side by side with the employees in servicing the customers and asking for a donation to support the charity. Afterward, we were then taken to the actual House and it was amazing. I truly received an education, my eyes were opened.

Fast forward to spring 2010, I was given the privilege of participating in the National Moms Night Out event which provided a dinner, entertainment and pampering services for the mothers of the House. Those women were so deserving, due to their tenacity and love for which they have for their children. The children of whom are dealing daily with very serious illness.

Now , here we are in the current day and I have been given the privilege once again to show support for this wonderful charity. In my short time of dealing with this charity I witnessed with my own eyes how far a small contribution can go. Therefore I make a conscious effort to regularly contribute. A contribution to this charity goes to support the families of children who are fighting for their lives. People who travel many miles just to have the life saving treatment that their children need. The recipients not only receive beautiful and comfortable housing, but they get help in so many other areas.

Last year through the contributions of many people across the nation, RMHC was able to raise 20 million dollars! Wow! That shows that there is power in numbers, when everyone just gives a little it will grow a lot. That is why I am encouraging everyone that I know to remember September 9, 2010 , The National Day of Change. Walk into your local McDonald's search for the donation box and please drop in your pocket change. Use this as an opportunity to teach your child about charity and giving back to help those less fortunate. It's best to teach them now, leading by example.

Your donation will not go to waste. You won't have to worry that your funds are being used appropriately...I've seen it for myself. So , help make a difference in a families life. Give up your pocket change on September 9Th. To learn even more, including viewing video and pictures click here. RSVP for this event on Facebook and share with your friends, get them involved too! There is so much satisfaction in giving.

*this is not a paid post, however I was contacted to share the information with my readers and it is written from the heart*

I used to do it several times a day, but I gave it up

Lately, my conscious has really been giving me a good thrashing. I am plagued by guilty feelings due to some very bad habits that I have acquired. I'm not the only one... every body's doing it. Some are trying to be discreet about it and others are boldly doing it without shame, even in front of the kids! First I started to do it just a little bit, you know, for fun. Then it turned into an everyday occurrence as if I had no more control, my lack of patience got the best of me.

I'm not talking about anything illegal, as I'm sure you are sitting there trying to figure where I'm going with this. Actually depending on which state you live in, it is considered illegal and is punishable by law. What am I referring to? TWD: Texting While Driving. Yeah, I've been really bad about this. But lately I've been trying hard to stop this pattern of behaviour. For one thing, I do not want to be the one who causes a horrible accident perhaps killing someone on the road because of my carelessness. Not only that, but I could injure or kill myself and those that I love in my own vehicle. As I drive everyday I am carrying precious cargo in my backseat, my two babies. How can I be angry with another driver for being careless if I am doing the same thing? I cannot rightfully expect a stranger to care about the safety of my children if I myself am not taking the same if not safer precautions while behind the wheel of my car. Not to mention how much of a hypocrite I will become in the eyes of my children , when I talk to them about being a safe driver, setting rules for them that I myself am not willing to follow. I know that children are more apt to follow what a parent does rather than what they say. Lord knows, that when they become of driving age I will have PLENTY to say, but I want to have good actions to support my words.

Studies have shown that a person who is distracted by texting while driving has the same driving skills as a person who has had four alcoholic beverages! And just like a drunk driver, a person who texts and talks on the phone while driving thinks that everything is under control and that nothing is going to happen to them. WRONG! It is so very possible. Just with the push of a button, someones life is in your hands. It could be a passenger in your car, an adult or child crossing the street or another driver in the next lane over. One careless action can cause a person to be blood guilty in a major way, changing lives of families forever.

So, to prove to myself, to my children and to others that I am committed to being a safe driver, I took the pledge. I went to Oprah.com and pledged to stop texting while driving and to only use my cellphone with a hands free device while driving if I have to make or take a call.

What about you? Are you guilty? Can you make changes in your daily habit and routine while commuting to and fro? If you want to do the right thing along with thousands of others, go to Oprah's site and take the NO PHONE ZONE PLEDGE . I did, and I am happy to have done it. Now my conscious is clear. It's one less thing I have to worry about.

There is a lot to be learned from Art

When we were in Washington DC last week we decided to take in some sights. No point in going somewhere if I can't see the sights right? In true form we (my #1 home girl and I) were pushing our time limits to the max. We should have left DC before 12 noon but being the habitual line crosser's that we are, we did not leave until 6pm.

One thing we did was visit the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art. What a treat! It was there, that I was introduced to the mind blowing art of Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare MBE. His work is pure genius to me. He uses painting, sculpture, photography and film to address social and racial issues relevant especially to Africa, The french revolution and European colonialism. One aspect of his art that is unique in my mind is his use of Dutch Wax Fabric. He really made me think, reflect and learn things of which I was not very familiar. Interesting, so interesting.

Here are some pictures of his art featured in the exhibit that are from the Smithsonian Website. The pictures don't really do it justice, you had to be there.

Go Red , it does more good than you think.

Normally, for my Therapeutic Thursday's post I share some information about the benefits of essential oils or something else along those lines. This week however, I am going to blog about the benefits and power of RED....red cherries.

February is National Cherry month, cherries are now considered a "super food." Cherries are very high in antioxidants and beta-carotene (19 times more than blueberries and strawberries). It is also a good source of iron and fiber among other important nutrients. New studies are showing that cherries help with minimizing the pain of such ailments as arthritis and gout. Which means it must have anti-inflammatory properties. This super fruit also has the ability to lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes and certain types of cancer.Wow, who knew? I guess the CDC and JAMA. ;)

Even more interesting to me was learning that cherries contain melatonin (a sleep regulator) and that if a person has a diet enriched with cherries they can shrink the belly fat. SAY WHAT? I don't know about you, but I can always use a good night sleep and a slimmer waist.

If you would like to know more information about the benefits of cherries and how to incorporate them in your healthy lifestyle check out www.choosecherries.com

Okay, so what are you waiting for? GO GET SOME CHERRIES.

Sins Of The Mother

Have you seen the previews for the upcoming movies for Black History Month on the Lifetime network? Every Saturday night they will be highlighting a different movie in February.

In addition to Saturday nights there will also be the premiere of a new movie based on the book Orange Mint and Honey by Carleen Brice.

The movie will feature the sultry sistah of soul Jill Scott. I think she is an awesome actress, very believable and organic. The premise of the movie appears to be one that goes into the trenches of deep family issues. Touching the core of such taboo topics as alcoholism and abuse and the haunting effects it has on a child, an adult child. There are lessons about forgiveness and acceptance. I am so ready to see this movie as I know it will cause me to think over my own issues. My goal is to actually read the book BEFORE the movie is premiered. Ahem! *that is my GOAL*. If I do not succeed then I will just have to settle for the movie. After it airs I will be back with my take on the movie. Be sure to check me out next week for my review....bring a hot cup of coffee!

Here is the trailer!

Something to Celebrate 365 days

I know some of you have read about my experiences at Blogalicious, my feelings on it and also the wonderful people I have met. Of the people I have connected with through that conference, one of them is absolutely charming, creative and very much THE entrepreneur; Erica Campbell of Soiree'365. I had the privilege of working with her for the Trumpet Awards gifting suite last week and I am very grateful to her for the opportunity.

Of all the years that the Trumpet Awards have been in existence, 2010 was the first year that they have actually had a gifting suite. The success of the Soiree'365 gift suite was due to the coordination efforts of Miss Campbell. Soiree'365 is well known and appreciated by it's clientele for the creative decorations, gorgeous hand wrapped candy and stylish gifts and gift baskets. I was very impressed with the creativity in even the smallest things. Simple or elaborate, Soiree'365 has the perfect thing you need to host the best parties, girls night out, wedding, showers, anniversaries or whatever you have in mind. They strive to make every event a fabulous celebration, their mission is to celebrate "Heritage, Life & Tradition."

Are you hosting an event soon? Not sure how to do what you want to do? Check out the website for Soiree365 I'm sure you will be pleased with everything she has to offer. In the meantime look at a couple of the photos I took from the gifting suite of their fabulous table setting.

What are the options when what is natural is not an option?

Some where along the way I picked up the habit of noticing labels, especially name brands. There was a time in my life in which I wouldn't be caught dead in public with an "off brand." I was like that with everything from clothing & personal items to food & appliances. I always felt that the name brand and the price determined the quality. When my son was born, I kept up this pattern of label watching, only the best for my baby, right?

So, when I had to decide how I will feed my newborn it was only natural that I chose breastfeeding. It was the best. We breastfed for 7 months and then needed to switch to formula. Once again....the best. So we bought the best name brand of infant formula that we could afford.

As I look back on my label watching patterns now, I feel so silly. I was focused on the wrong things, worrying more about the brand than the quality ingredients that were to provide needed nutrients to my child.

I recently read the Consumer Reports regarding the subject of buying formula and to my surprise I realized that I wasted a lot of money. How much? I really don't know the exact figures, but according to reports the average formula fed baby will drink about $2,000.00 worth by it's first birthday. I figure since I only breast fed thru 7 months, I didn't spend that much, but still...every dime counts. While I was watching the name brands I should have really been reading ingredient labels. If I had then I would have known that all of the baby formula sitting on the shelves had the same levels of nutrition. The formula's may be varied but the nutrition is the same, because the Food and Drug Administration set certain standards for all Formula manufacturers in the U.S. . As long as the formula was bought before the "use by " date, it was of acceptable quality.

Even more importantly to consider are the various features of the formula that is chosen. I remember times when I would spend seemingly hours in the baby aisle trying to figure out which added feature was "the best." It was confusing! A baby needs formula that is fortified with Iron, and probiotics are good for proper digestion and balancing of the flora in the intestines. Just about every type of formula nowadays contains DHA and ARA, both of which are synthetic versions of the natural fatty acids found in a woman's natural breast milk. This natural ingredient is supposed to assist in proper brain and eye development. However, the scientific evidence supporting whether or not the synthetic versions of these fatty acids that are added is beneficial in the long term is still on the fence. According to certain studies on this subject, the positive effects that come from this additional feature is short term, not long term. Which in my opinion means that if it costs more to have it, perhaps you don't need to buy it. Especially if it's synthetic and not proven to be beneficial in the long term. Save the money.

Seems to me that when looking to buy formula, today's modern mommy should still look at the label. Not for the name brand only, but for the things that matter the most. I am no longer in the baby aisle when shopping at the grocery store, but if I was I would not repeat that silly way of doing things. I would clip my coupons, sign up for savings and free products with my formula company of choice and most importantly I'd buy the store brand...proudly!

Reading the Consumer Report has certainly opened my eyes to labels and ingredients. It basically has proven what my husband (Mr. frugal himself) has been telling me all along: "The name brand doesn't always matter, it's the ingredients. Many products are made the same, the only thing different is the name."

For further information you can go to http://blogs.consumerreports.org/baby/2009/07/save-money-on-baby-stuff-cheap-formula.html

Orange is the color for January part 2-Say something!

As you may know by now, January is national Cervical Cancer Awareness month. Why is this of importance to you? Well, because cervical cancer used to be the leading cause for cancer deaths in the united states. However due to increased awareness and yearly Pap tests, women are able to find cervical precancer before it actually develops into full blown cancer. Which results in fewer deaths. Regardless of your age, race, health or relationship (monogamous or not) you are still at risk. If you are a female, you need to be in the KNOW.

The main cause of cervical cancer is the human papillomavirus, better known as HPV. It is passed on through sexual contact. This virus is very common, in fact according to the CDC most sexually active women at some point in their lives will have contracted the virus, the majority of which will not develop into cervical cancer. Although not all who contract HPV will develop cancer do not be fooled into thinking that cancer is the ONLY thing to worry about. Did you know that there are over 100 types of the virus? Of which there are various types of warts. There is low risk HPV and high risk HPV (30 of which are the cancerous type)

Here are some additional facts for you to consider:

  • During the the development of HPV you may not have symptoms.

  • Using condoms is not a sure protection against the virus.

  • HPV can be contracted by skin on skin contact and even anal sex.

  • Even if you have been married for years or only have one partner it is possible to have been infected. (that was a shocker for me)

  • HPV can be contracted in the mouth, tongue, throat and tonsils

Education is your best form of protection against HPV and cervical cancer. Share what you have learned with others. Say Something! Click this link to get your say something kit to help teach your friends and family about cervical cancer.

Orange is the color for January- Part 1

Last year, my cousin /business partner /best friend and I came up with the idea to merge our two passions; massage and reflexology to create one business. Our services are for everyone, but with a concentration on women. Helping women to create a healthy place within their own mind and body, remembering that beauty begins within. (more on that later, I promise.) Anyhow, as we were forming this venture I realized that I wanted to be more than just another "spa service", that I wanted to be one that was an advocate and supporter regarding health issues related to women. Not any random issue, but one that was of importance to me personally. One that has affected myself or those that I love. The first health issue I thought of was HPV and cervical cancer. Although I do not personally have either of these illnesses, I am related to women that do, and I would like to understand more about it so that I can be more of a support.
As I was pondering these thoughts, it occurred to me that I met some lovely ladies at Blogalicious who were representing Tamika and Friends. A wonderful organization dedicated to spreading the word about prevention , treatment and support for HPV and cervical cancer. I pulled out their brochure, and contacted them. Their website www.tamikaandfriends.org is full of advice and soul stirring personal stories of women, including Tamika Felder herself. They have great programs to fit every one's needs and an opportunity for all to get involved from a small to a large level.

I signed up to be a friend and I am so excited! My first chance to report for supporter duty will be on January 27Th for National Wear Orange Day. In a few days I will post more information about what this small event will entail and lead up to a larger event in the weeks to come. HPV and cervical cancer is PREVENTABLE AND TREATABLE . January is National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. Take the first step and get educated on the subject. It could save your life or that of someone you love.

Until next time....

THIS THING CALLED LOVE

Every year the last week in September is World Reflexology Week .

I first learned of Reflexology in 2002 at an Aromatherapy Conference in Seattle Washington. It was there that I learned of it's abilities, and was drawn in. I was amazed by the fact that there was an actual map of the human body on each and every persons feet (check out my cool reflexology widget on the side). That I could cause a beneficial reaction within the various systems in the body with a specified touch made me feel very useful. It all sounded so unreal but since I knew that our bodies are so wonderfully made, the potential was certainly there. So I set out to study it. Fortunately for me there was an actual Reflexology school right in the Atlanta area and as they say...the rest is history. Six years and many clients later I still love what I have learned.

There is much satisfaction in knowing that I have helped a person who has been suffering with a particular illness to gain relief. I feel good inside when it is through my skillful work that I have been able to give someone peaceful closure to a hectic day. I know the results from reflexology that I have seen with my own family, friends and clients. Which is why I try to help spread the word. Reflexology is the one therapy that works to heal the body from the inside out, opposite of massage therapy which works from the outside in. Although many of the results are the same. In one session a skilled reflexologist can cover all of your body systems, joints & muscles, providing your body what it needs to function optimally. In the past it was considered as a quack therapy, however more and more folks today are beginning to sing it's praises. The benefits of reflexology have become so widespread, that even those in the Medical profession such as Dr. Oz, are giving credit where credit is due.

So in honor of World Reflexology Week I decided to give a complimentary loving gift of touch to my friends and family. Especially the hubby and children. Often they see me working on others but have to take a back seat for their turn . So I'm giving them what they've been waiting for, and I'm promising to keep it regular.

Now, I know what you are thinking. You want something too right? Well, If I cant give you the loving gift of touch how about a Reflexology Decoder along with a 1 ounce bottle of lavender and peppermint massage oil to use on your feet or someone that you love?
This decoder supplies an instant introduction to the popular healing practices of reflexology. The reflexology decoder provides all the necessary maps for the hands and feet in considerable color coded detail. Accompanied with the aromatherapy massage oil, this package is a retail value of about $20.

To win this giveaway you must do two things.

  1. Become a follower of my blog : I'm the Mommy I'll Blog if I want to
  2. Leave a comment telling me one way that you give a loving gift to your friends and family.

*The giveaway ends on 10/02*

* the winner will be seleted and announced on my blogpost.*

A tall glass of cool water

There is one thing that I like about myself. Well....there's more than one thing, but you know what I mean. Really though, the one thing that I am referring to is my appreciation for variety. I have always felt that variety is the spice of life. Never could I go through life as a dull dame. I enjoy new experiences, eagerly anticipating my reactions and responses. happy to add a new notch to my belt. And don't you agree that it adds to great conversation when a person is not one dimensional?

An area that I have always prided myself for having variety, is music. I have an appreciation for good music. Maybe it stems from fond memories of my father sitting late nights at his turntables spinning out the jams that made me shake a leg, swoon & croon. Or it could be the times that my mother took me to the theater and with wonderment I tuned into the orchestra as they used instruments to say what the characters were feeling. As I grew older I ventured into all types of music of various genres and it is this type of gift that I also give to my children.
Recently I had the privilege of listening to the new CD ; YOUR SONGS from HARRY CONNICK JR.. What a delightful treat, a collection of every one's favorites sung in classic Harry style. I popped this CD in while cooking dinner, my children and I began to snap our fingers and tap our toes. It was enjoyable from beginning to end. He added his own special touch to such songs that really are my favorites such as *JUST THE WAY YOUR ARE Billy Joel * THE WAY YOU LOOK TONIGHT* SMILE Charlie Chaplin*THE FIRST TIME EVER I SAW YOUR FACE Roberta Flack*ANDI LOVE HER the beatles * MONA LISA Nat King Cole. You can expect these hits, plus eight more grooving tracks.

September 22 was the release date of his collection of Your favorite songs, available on itunes and everywhere. Although he is singing songs that he did not write, he still is the great music arranger, orchestrator, and conductor that made him who he is. Mr. Connick is in high demand not only because of his sultry, seductive voice but because he seems to be such an awesome guy. Click his picture to check out a video clip of Harry getting personal backstage on the Oprah show.
Wow, gotta love him!

A steamy situation

There are times when I hear about certain things and I say to myself "oh what a cool idea , I'm gonna try that one day". However Last week was not one of those times. I was actually a little caught off guard by my own quick and ardent reaction.

I was visiting a fellow bloggers site and I came across a post that really caught my attention:
"It was smoking hot and I was dripping wet"
...hmmmmm, really?
I know, catchy, right? So I proceed to read the post, and well, um, hehehe, it wasn't at all what I suspected. C'mon, you know you thought it too. Well, anyway she goes on to describe what I later called one of Atlanta's best kept secrets until now.

The JeJu Home of well being, a Korean style spa, sauna & bath house. She was so descriptive with the serenity and tranquility of the environment. Peace washed over me like I was there. She explained so perfectly how purifying and uninhibiting the total experience was. I was beginning to feel the rush of liberation. I just had to try it for myself. Right away. Seriously. Right away. Between homeschooling, being mommy, wifey, and trying to run a business, needless to say I was very anxious. So two days later I grabbed my # 1 home girl and we went to indulge ourselves.

It all played out just as Lisa so vividly described. We were given our supplies for the duration of our time there; an exfoliating wash cloth, a uniform, a toothbrush and keys for the lockers. Once in the women's area we had to remove our shoes, and our clothes, and then it was FREEDOM! Yep! In all our NATURAL BORN GLORY we were free to use the Korean bath house area of the facility. Mentally I was prepared for that because I had been forewarned, that was actually a bonus to me. It was sheer bliss immerging myself in the three mineral water tubs. Hot, warm and cold. There is a Shower and bath area, fa infrared lights, traditional dry and steam sauna's and an area for professional services such as polishing body scrubs. It was a requirement for all to shower before taking part in anything. VERY clean. I took my time and soaked it all in. Literally it was a pampering session to myself, for myself. I saw there, women of all races, several of which were non American. I was amazed to see small groups of women washing each other's back, and each other's hair , all with a sense of sincerity and a genuine reciprocity that is often lacking within the western culture. No one acted as if it was weird or as lesbianism. It was natural. It was an act that I viewed as a beautiful form of bonding, compassion, a loving act of kindness exchanged within the sisterhood. Those profound thoughts rang the bells of enlightenment within my mind.

Unbelievably we spent a couple of hours in that one area before we dressed in our scrubs and moved on to the unisex area where there are 6 therapeutic dry saunas. Each with it's own personality, unique and healing in it's own way. Available to all, are plump vinyl pillows and sleep mats to take to the room of your choice. I spent time and laid down in every sauna room and my favorites are ; the baked Korean clay sauna, the rock salt sauna, the jade sauna, and the charcoal sauna. I took the opportunity of the solace to reflect, ponder and appreciate. Oh, it was certainly soothing to my soul. Within those walls we felt no urgent needs, no schedules to keep up. Plain and simply no pressure. *Sigh* Honey, it was about this time you could've blown me over with a feather! Before we knew it, a total of eight hours had passed and that was all without even getting the luxurious spa services. Wow! what a night. When we finally left, our bodies felt like it had been thoroughly massaged and our skin felt velvety smooth.

With such a great experience, I am eagerly anticipating my return because at a cost of $25, why not? Check out the photos that I got from the website or better yet go there to see it for yourself. You will be thrilled. If you would like to read the very delicious post that sent me in search of my sanity, Check out LisaCwrite's blog.

Theyyyyy'rrrrrrrrre Heeeerrrrrre!

No. No one scary. In fact they are completely sweet and lovable. At least my kids and their friends think so. Who am I talking about?
The Zhu Zhu Pets!
My Children and I were delighted when selected to host a Zhu Zhu pet party. These cute little toy pets are a much cleaner, and hassel free way to introduce a pet into your home. Each Zhu Zhu pet comes with a name, and rolls around by itself on a hard surface (we had to use our kitchen floor). They also make little noises, over 40 sounds varying from little chirps and beeps to actual cow and chicken sounds. I think I even heard a train sound one time. My kids thought they were really adorable. What I like is that unlike a REAL hamster, there is no mess to clean up and food to buy, and we certainly don't have to deal with it dying. My children had a real hamster once...So! like I said, these are so much easier to care for.

One of the Attachable accessories that the pets can play on. A ramp and twisty slide. It actually goes up the ramp and down the slide on it's own.

A activity center / habitat for the pets

The display of the Zhu Zhu pets

Once all of the party guests had arrived, the mayhem began! Every kid wanted one, and they all received a accessory for their pet. There was a car with a garage that the pet could ride in. A slide, A surf board, a Giant activity center and even a ball for the pet to roam around the house in! What's great is that the accessories are all attachable, which means each piece can connect to the other piece to create a very big activity center with plenty for a pet or two, to do. Some assembly is required and a little help is needed by an adult to put the accessories together, but it was not overly difficult. The children loved racing their pets too! I could tell that these pets would be a good way to keep the kids entertained.
At the end of the day, my children slept with their pet...Something I NEVER let them do when they had a real hamster.

That Says it all Folks!

There is always two sides to a story.

A few weeks ago I was given the opportunity to view the exhibit Presented by Tavis Smiley, America I am. Right away, I said Yes! I heard a little bit about it but really did not know anyone personally who actually attended.

Let me just tell you, I was moved from the very beginning to the very end. The exhibit began with the profound words of W.E B. Duboise. I felt eery, solemn and reflective as I went Walking through a simulation of the "Door of no return" at the Cape Coast Castle, viewed the personal diary of Malcolm X and the chair in which Martin Luther King sat in during his trial. And hurt at my heart upon viewing the savage and beastly items that were used to enslave many victims of the African slave trade.

Although, one cannot discuss or create an exhibit of the African in America without acknowledging the disgraceful and sad events that it involves, one also cannot omit the beauty, skill, craftsmanship and ingenuity that they have brought to America. Which is another reason that I appreciated the exhibit. I was able to see beautiful pieces of cookware, basketwork, and quilting that was crafted by the hands of slaves. The exhibit tactfully yet with boldness let it be known that the once great economy of this country was built upon the hard labor of the enslaved African men and women.

Towards the end of the exhibit we were brought right into our day and time, viewing photos, donated clothing, musical instruments, and sports memorabilia. All from the many African Americans who have played major roles in pop culture, education and basically all things "American".

What a great experience for all who wish to know more, to gain a deeper understanding and empathy for the other side of history.

I had some techical difficutlies posting the pictures. So if you would like to view pictures of the exhibit, click here.

Sugar and spice, everything nice

MMmmmmm, mmm, mmm!! is all I have to say....Actually, scratch that. I have a whole lot to say, about CamiCakes Cupcakes.

Last Friday night I was invited out to a "sweetup" in a new bakery in the Buckhead area. I went with little expectations, a little curiosity and a small craving for the sweet potato cupcake that was all the rave with the Funky diva Girl.

Well, I was thoroughly and pleasantly satisfied with this bakery. First of all the owner was genuine and kind. Upon walking through the door I immediately felt drawn in because the decor is simple, yet charming, earthy, soulful and girly all rolled into one visually delicious treat. As I looked around I was so impressed with her pictures of music greats from times past such as the great John Coltrane, Billie Holiday, and Duke Ellington. I began to get a feeling of nostalgia, remembering the things I read about in the Jazz clubs of Harlem, New York. This place has charm I tell ya.... But back to the mmmm, mmmm, mmmm of it all. There were plenty of sample cupcakes to choose from, but once I had a taste of one, I knew I was sold! I quickly made a beeline to the counter and peered at all the cupcakes they offered (with stars in my eyes) and made an order of a half a dozen to take home and two to eat right then.
I had the chocolate raspberry almond cream cupcake and the pineapple toasted coconut cupcake....hmmmm.

Needless to say, my half dozen box never made it to a full 24 hours. My husband and I devoured the sweet little things.
But don't take my word for it. Try them for yourself if you are in the Buckhead area of Atlanta or if you don't mind taking a little trip for a sweet treat, you will not be let down.
I promise.
